Last night we watched a video of a musical presented by a fellowship from University of Berkeley on the life of the martyr missionary Jim Elliot (1927-1956). Jim and four other men went into Ecuador with the hope of bringing the gospel to the then savage Auca tribe. On January 8th 1956, after having been on the Auca land for about 5 days, the four men were ambushed by the Aucas and speared to death. Though the men had rifle with them, later testimonies by the Auca stated that, the men only fired warning shots into the air because they had made a promised to each other that they would not use the rifle to shoot the Aucas. Jim was survived by his daughter and wife Elisabeth Elliot who later moved into the Auca land and did what her husband had hoped to do - share the gospel with the Aucas. One cannot comprehend the meaning of this but yet Jim and the four men choose to serve the god they loved w/all even when it meant giving their life. Elisabeth Elliot later said “these have inspired and challenged numerous people along the years for a closer walk in service to the lord.”

In our day and age were there is not much security of anything I often wonder how many tomorrow are there? The ones that went to work on that fateful day in September 2001 didn’t know that they will not make it till the end of the day. When a strange virus strikes Asia no one knows who will be next victim to the deadly virus. We are often so conscious about our health or our physical figure that we watch what we eat and intake vitamin in hopes of prolonging our lives. But the curtain bounds to come down at some time and what’s left when the curtain falls? The life of Jim Elliot was not long but his life has impacted and encouraged many to be sent by god.

“God, I pray thee, light these idle sticks of my life and may I burn for thee. Consume my life, my god, for it is thine. I seek not a long life, but a full one, like you, Lord Jesus.” Jim Elliot

Last night I asked myself what am I doing with my passion? Because four men had offered up their passion to the lord and the lord has done great things with it~
