Today I want to do something different than post pictures.
In the past weekend we have heard a lot about Terry Schiavo. If you do not know who Terry Schiavo is here is a brief summary from Cindy.
Basically, the judge in Florida has ordered for Terri’s tubes to be removed this afternoon at 1pm, after which she will starve to death in the next week or so. Her parents have been fighting her husband for years to keep Terri alive. Her husband, who has repeatedly violated his guardian duties to Terri since she collapsed in 1990, claims Terri would not want to live in a permanent and vegetative state. All Terri’s other relations (parents, brother, best friend) claim otherwise and even claim thru their interactions with her that she’s not in a PVS state.
I haven’t been following the news exactly but I know President Bush just signed a bill that was passed by the Congress to get the Federal Court involved in this case. Anyhow, I was thinking about what it means to “be alive..?”
At first I thought they were going to pull the air tube from Terry so it would end faster for her. But I later found out that it is true that they are pulling the tubes that feed her food and water. What insane people would starve someone to death and not to mention a sick woman? But I guess many doctors are arguing that she is brain dead so it doesn’t matter? Now my question is maybe some doctors are correct that Terry is brain dead but on the other hand she is a living being. She is alive as her heart is still beating so how in the world can doctors say she is dead and the Florida judge rules to end her life by starving her to death? What is the argument? I really cannot understand. Second question is can we pull the plug on someone simply because they would not want to live in a certain state or condition?
